Pain Tolerance in Sport

Eddie O’Connor, PhD, CC–AASP Performance Excellence Center

Pain is ever-present in sport.  An athlete’s ability to tolerate pain is essential to success. Pain provides valuable information about your body and how it is performing.  To maximize its usefulness it is important to understand what kind of pain should be listened to and what type is helpful or safe to work through.
First, we must define the different types of pain you can experience:

  • Fatigue and discomfort. This is an unpleasant feeling produced by effort, but not strong enough to be labeled “pain.”  Athletes learn to be “comfortable being uncomfortable,” as such efforts are a regular and necessary part of most sports.  With continued effort, discomfort can turn into …
  • Positive training pain. This pain often occurs with endurance exercise, and includes muscle fatigue and sensations in the lungs and heart that can range from unpleasant to what is typically thought of as pain.  It is neither threatening nor a sign of injury. Because athletes know the cause, are in control of their effort, and recognize that these feelings are beneficial and can enhance performance.  In short, positive training pain is a good sign of effort and improvement.
  • Negative training pain is still not indicative of an injury, but goes beyond positive signs of training benefit.  An example may be extreme soreness that lasts for days.  There may be an overtraining risk.
  • Negative warning pain is similar to negative training pain, with the added element of threat.  It may be a new experience of pain and a sign of injury occurring.  It typically occurs gradually, and allows the athlete to evaluate potential training causes and respond appropriately.
  • Negative acute pain is an intense and specific pain that occurs suddenly, often a result of injury.  It is often localized to a specific body part and is labeled as threatening. Continue reading

The location of the take off point in fiberglass pole vault

david bussabarger wrote:As to the springing action in fg. vaulting, what is impotant here is not what the vaulter is trying to do but what the vaulter actually does. If you carefully examine the springing action of large numbers of elite male vaulters ( vaulters who have exceeded 5.80m. ) it is obvious that, with few exceptions, they employ a forward /upward spring off action. This is reflected in the fact that the take off angle of elite male vaulters is typically inbetween that of triple jumpers and long jumpers ( about 18 degrees ). Note, this figure is from P. McGinnis’s article in the 2000 ed. of THE JUMPS. Springing directly upward ( like a long jumper ) at take off in the fg. vault creates 2 problems: 1. The more vertical the springing movement, the more the vaulter detracts from his/her ability to develop inward movement (due to conflicting movement ). 2.Vertical spring abruptly raises the c.g., which causes the lose of previously developed run speed and momentum. It is abit like a car hitting a speed bump. Therefore it is much more efficient to use a forward/upward springing action, which elite male vaulters do, whether by instinct or design.more

Joel’s Crazy Tricks – Vol 3

After a two year wait, Joel’s Crazy Tricks Volume 3 has finally been put together! In my opinion it outdoes the others significantly in all of the tricks/craziness/editing/quality!
It uses 185 different videos which took over 80 hours to put together. It is filmed across 47 different locations from all over the world.
For those who have not seen the first two, this series is pretty much a summary of what I get up to and is in a way my ‘showreel’. It includes: gymnastics, pole vaulting, cliff jumping, rope swinging and street tricking. Some of it is Damien Walters inspired, so thanks mate! I’ll keep trying to copy!
Music is mostly by Lunatica. The first song is ‘The Search Goes On’, the second song is ‘The Spell’. The song playing during the credits is ‘Eternal’ by Evanescence
Since filming the second one I won a prize which enabled me to buy a much better camera, new computer and great new software. Camera used is mostly a Sony HDR-SR11, although there are a few random shots taken with other cameras. Software is Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum.

Joel’s Crazy Tricks – Vol 4

Volume 4 of the ‘Joel’s Crazy Tricks’ series is again a step up from all the others. There’s a few things in this one that you are not likely to see anywhere else in the world. I’m really excited about it. It’s a lot more hectic than the others so you may need to watch a couple of times to take everything in.

The shots were taken from various locations around Australia and New Zealand, from between May 2010 to September 2011. What may be somewhat interesting is that I had surgery on my foot and ankle in September 2010 so I’m excited this can all come together so quickly and easily!
The bible quote in this one is taken from the American Standard Version.
Otherwise, as always, enjoy! Full HD this time so make sure you click the 1080p button for best quality! And crank the sound!
